  • The Apollo Glenferrie. A short life, revisited by Ian Smith. Originally known as Manresa Hall, the theatre boasted a Typhoon Ventilation System.
  • Red Roses Tonight. The Codewords for theatre staff to warn of imminent air raid activity. Guy Murdoch traces many of the actions and reactions within theatres during Britain's wartime period.
  • Lawrence Brothers - Another Perspective. Ern Bruhn, mentioned in our previous Lawrence Brothers articles (ISS.38 ISS.39) provides more detail.
  • The Verne East Malvern. Ian Smith traces the history of this Lawrence re-launched theatre on Waverley Road at East Malvern. The Australian Playhouse subsequently used the building to 'foster the work of australians in all branches of theatre.....' That venture was shortlived.
  • Cheltenham Theatres - Brian Hunt looks at the Cheltenham Memorial Hall and its varied usage. A Martin Powell Photograph(2001) depicts the building as a Female Fitness Centre. Some comparisons are provided with venues such as the Village Southland 16 Megaplex.
  • McLeods New Movie Palace. June 7th 2003 saw the long awaited opening of the new McLeods Movie Palace. Reg Jones records the occasion in CinemaRecord.
  • Marvellous Memories - The Surrey Years. Roderick Smith takes a nostalgic look back to the late fifties and early sixties.

ISS.42 · Edition 4 - 2003

  • CATHS visits Andersons Cinemas. Brian MILLER records the July 13th 2003 visit to Melbourne's newest cinema complex - the Victoria Gardens Cinemas on the corner of Victoria and Burnley Streets at Richmond. Crying Rooms for infants, popular in the new cinemas in the Thirties, are a family friendly feature making a welcome return.
  • Red Roses Tonight (Conclusion). This Fred PAGE sourced material based on the Guy BOLTON book Red Roses Every Night: An Account of London Cinemas Under Fire, Quality Press 1948, concludes in this issue. The place of the GRANADA Cinemas in wartime London, and the relationship between Cinema and loyal customer is well detailed here. Refer also to the preceding issues of CinemaRecord.
  • Rose Coloured Glasses. Peter WILLIAMS records some of the upsides of working for Taylor-Taylor, Hobson, the precision lens manufacturer based in the UK Midlands. The acquisition by RANK did not improve the freebies.
  • Theatre Images. Brian MILLER investigates slogans used by various Cinemas in their advertising logos.
  • * IVANHOE THEATRE. Gary ROSS traces the history of this Kaberry and Chard stadium style cinema. Think what 20,000 Pounds would buy today. (For younger folk, think $40,000). One of possibly only two Victorian Cinemas from their design, the architects were more widely represented interstate. The article is accompanied by photographs of the facades, about 1930, and and interior shot taken about 1940.
  • Tim ARMSTRONG follows Gary with Personal Memories of the Hoyts IVANHOE, beginning in 1967 with The Golden Blade (Rock HUDSON) Theatre Plan Views are included in the articles.
  • Memories of the Kings - Fred PAGE. Fred's memories commence in 1942 with a 3KZ broadcast from the 'King's Theatre as a screening picture house'. A cutting referring to the change from live to screen was acquired by Fred some fifty years later. The Kings was not popular with all patrons. The theatre site became the Russell Cinemas complex.
  • Peter WOOLNAGH's Photo request (Her Majesty's, Exhibition Street, 1911) is presented on Page 23.
  • * A Salute to the State. This extensive set of articles with several contributors is supported by fourteen large photographs with very significant detail. A truly bumper issue.
