Melbourne Film Buffs Weekend 2001

Film Buffs Weekend

The third annual CATHS Melbourne Film Buffs Weekend took place on the 17th and 18th March 2001. The event was a huge success with over 70 people attending, including some members of the New Zealand Film Buffs group, and visitors from interstate. The Weekend was packed with lots of great events for cinema enthusiasts including:

Collectors Buy & Sell and Auction where collectors picked up some great bargains on cinema memorabilia, movies, projectors, cine-cameras, and related items.

Talk by Peter Lord on his involvement in the film industry in Melbourne. Peter was a sound recordist at the Melbourne 1956 Olympics, and later was involved with the establishment of the Victorian Film Laboratories which he managed for many years. Representatives from ScreenSound Australia attended the FIlm Buffs Weekend and as a result of hearing Peter's talk, have since done an in-depth interview with him about his career.

Visit to the Film Plus film processing laboratory in St Kilda who process movie film and operate a film-to-video transfer service.

Demonstration of unusual film gauges by Mike Trickett, including 9.5mm sound, 17.5mm sound, Edison 22mm home movie gauge, and 28mm.

Tour of the Hoyts Croydon 4 cinema multiplex. The complex, which was originally a twin, includes a 70mm projector.

Tour of the Eastern FM Radio station at Croydon

Saturday Night Dinner and entertainment, featuring our marvellous lolly girl, a quiz and screening of a video of the CATHS tour of New Zealand featuring specialist museums, early sound recording equipment etc.

Visit to a most interesting home cinema. As well as a great show, a fantastic lunch was turned on for over 50 people!

A great Weekend with lots of FUN!
