Westgarth Theatre 80th Anniversary
On Saturday 20th October 2001 Northcote's historic Westgarth Picture Theatre celebrates its 80th anniversary. Classified as locally significant in 1994 by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) it is the oldest purpose-built cinema still operating in Melbourne. Today Westgarth is the last living remnant of the long ago halcyon days of cinema along High Street, Northcote.
To celebrate their 80th Birthday, the Westgarth is presenting a Free 3 Day Film Festival of classics and previews! Checkout the Westgarth 80th Anniversary page on the CATHS website for details of the Film Festival.
Congratulations to the Westgarth Theatre!

Over the Fence Comedy Film Festival
On Saturday 27th October the Mansfield Cinema is hosting the 2001 Over the Fence Comedy Film Festival. Melinda Grant of the Mansfield Cinema says, "We're always looking for something new and different to do at the cinema and are looking forward to this festival! I thought visitors to the CATHS website might be interested in it - in any case it's a lovely time of the year to visit Mansfield!"
OTF Comedy Film Festival started in Fremantle six years ago is now the largest touring film festival in Australia. The Festival opened in Fremantle on October 16 and is currently on a national tour winding up on November 25.
The aim of the Festival is to tour regions and cities in Australia with an event that inspires creativity and genuinely brings together an exhilirating mix of some of the most extraordinary comedy films in Australia.
This year's Festival will take you on a rollercoaster ride across the best and wildest Australian comedies produced over the last year - cartoons, strange documentaries, extraordinary live action comedies joined with an all new thread film created by some of the best comedy writers and directors working in Perth.
The Festival is a one night show which is hosted by a guest comedian and is very much a live event with the audience participating in voting and loudly expressing their enthusiasm. At the end of the festival, the team that produced the film which was voted most popular over all the venues will receive a $10,000 grant towards their next film. For national venue and program details visit the Festival's website at www.overthefence.com.au

The 16 films in the 2001 festival:
1 Cows Side Stop motion animation. Competing dairy farms - one Super genetic, the other organic and passive. Watch out - such full super cows are bound to explode and do!
2 Like It Is In this cruel and cheatin' world an assistant Vet feels so sorry for the elderly owner of her recently demised cat that he is willing to fake an entire cemetery in order to make her feel ok.
3 Mrs Tingwell Stop motion animation. A bizarre story of an Alien entering Mr Manager's office at the toilet factory. Mr Manager sends him out declaring "No Hawkers or Aliens". He leaves glumly. Mr Manager calls the secretary to tell her off, but how can he when he loves her so?
4 Brother Claymation about two brothers one of whom has cerebral palsy. A tragi-comedy of profound pathos and deliciousness.
5 It Was Dark A Private Detective whose work is going no where, unfortunately his voice over takes on a pace of its own and the PD tries to keep up.
6 A Little Experiment Two cynical film students decide they can no-longer put up with the incessant preaching from the new age Christian on campus. So they lure her to terrorise her but accidentally kill her. Suddenly there is light! And an figure emerges. It's Christ! Him! And he is a good on ya bloke Aussie. What a guy!
7 Causes Animation. The Chaos theory, as a butterfly flaps it's wings in the East so a cyclone can arise in the West, only this cyclone is money hungry crude investor driven franchises. But the whole thing is kinda cyclic, like life really.
8 Stump A revenge flick that twists and bites hard. Cool country girl chains her now EX lover round the neck to a stump. The idea is to rip the lyin' cheatin' man's head off. The race to save his head is on. The tables turn, he escapes and slings the chain round her neck and drives off and she for just one more time offers him "a blow" - if her head goes so does his.
9 Homecoming A bad boys birthday and he's come home to spend it in his favourite pursuit, a race with his clock-work toy, a computer and a the pleasure he gets out of it. 10 Lotto Two couples go out for Sat dinner. One is obsessed with Lotto, two play a prank and get the waiter to tell him his numbers are the winners. It's a good gag but the repercussions are not what they expected.

13 The Boot A guy is running, running and running. As he does he searches through his pockets looking for something. He gets to his mobile, he dials and asks his girlfriend to stop the car as he has his tie stuck in the boot.
14 ShutterBug A 3D animation. A tourist on Easter Island walking around crazily taking photo's of anything including the giant stone heads. And those heads have a body. See how you'd like having your body in the sand.
15 Joint Effort Two lethargic, simple characters set up a hydroponic hot house in the ceiling of their home, tap into some else's electricity and glide on. However when a power surge reveals competition two doors up there is fear. He's a tough mean looking man who has an even meaner Mafia like boss man. The battle is on who will be exposed, who will stay.
16 You Can't Dance Three Down and Out guys in London meet to tell each other intrepid stories they created during their day and today one tells how he danced his way into the heart of a beutiful woman.
