Victorian Movie Makers' Theatrette sold
It is with some sadness that Newsreel reports the December 2001 sale of the Victorian Movie Makers' Theatrette at 2 Napier Street Fitzroy. For more than six decades the Movie Makers, an amateur film society, has passionately pursued its love of producing and preserving film. However, the younger generation has not joined the fold and the evergreens, some now in their 80s, felt that the time had come to wistfully 'call it a day'.
CATHS member Graeme Smythe, a long time member of the Movie Makers, recalls the two terrace houses which formerly occupied the site in 1954 and his subsequent involvement in the construction of the Napier Street Theatrette.
CATHS proudly salutes the Victorian Movie Makers' indelible contribution to Victoria's history of film and wishes all members well for the future. We applaud the Movie Makers' splendid gesture of donating their library of old and rare footage to the State Film and Sound Archive.
Melbourne Super 8 Film Group winds up
After sixteen years of supporting all things Super 8, the Melbourne Super 8 Film Group is no more. A combination of declining audiences, the advance of digital video, and economic rationalisation within the film community (and Arts sector in general) over the past several years means the group can longer continue in the form it has in the past. It will re-emerge in 2002 - leaner, and broader in focus - to include all moving image mediums including video and 16mm.

Internet Archives
The Wayback Machine - a service from the Internet Archive and Alexa Internet, allows people to access and use archived versions of stored websites. Visitors to the Wayback Machine can type in a URL, select a date, and then begin surfing on an archived version of the web. The Wayback Machine is built so that it can be used and referenced by anybody and everybody.
The original idea for the Wayback Machine began in 1996, when the Internet Archive first began archiving the web. Now, five years later, with over 100 terabytes and a dozen web crawls completed, the Internet Archive has made the Wayback Machine available to the public.
The Wayback Machine - growing at a rate of 12 terabytes per month - is the largest known database in the world, containing multiple copies of the entire publicly available web. This eclipses the amount of data contained in the world's largest libraries, including the Library of Congress.

Pandora Archive - preserving significant Australian Internet publications.
The Pandora Project was set up in June 1996 at the National Library of Australia to:

Develop policy and procedures for the preservation and provision of access to Australian online publications
Develop a national strategy for the long-term preservation of online publications
The State Library of Victoria (SLV) became a partner in the project in July 1998 and has responsibility for selecting and cataloging Victorian websites for Pandora. Other partners include the state libraries of South Australia and New South Wales, ScreenSound Australia, the library and information services of Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
The CATHS website has been selected by Pandora to be included in its archive of Victorian websites.
