Green Room Awards to open Her Majesty'sThe Green Room Awards Association award excellence on the Melbourne stage in the disciplines of drama, opera, dance, music theatre, cabaret and fringe theatre. This year's Green Room Awards Ceremony is to be held on Sunday 5th May.A spokesperson for the Association said: "We are particularly thrilled to announce that this year's Awards Ceremony re-opens the newly-restored Her Majesty's Theatre Melbourne and commemorates the memory of another great Lady of Australian Theatre, Lady 'Viola' Tait AM. "This year's Award Ceremony is of particular significance because it is the first time that we are privileged to have as co-sponsors, Her Majesty's Theatre (Mike Walsh OBE - Hayden Attractions Pty Ltd) and The Victorian Arts Centre Trust (Tim Jacobs, - CEO - VACT)." "For almost 20 years we have hosted a Lifetime Achievement Award. We are thrilled to announce that William 'Bill' Akers AM is the recipient of this year's Lifetime Achievement Award; the most prestigious award that we bestow." Previous recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award comprise an impressive alumni of Melbourne Theatre contributors: John Sumner, Dame Peggy van Praagh, Irene Mitchell, Betty Pounder, Dame Joan Hammond, Edna Edgley, Ray Powell, John McCallum, Noel Pelly John Truscott, Alfred Ruskin, Anne Fraser, Patricia Kennedy, Laurel Martyn, Dame Margaret Scott, Charles Tingwell, Jill Perryman, and Liz Jones. Apart from the awards within each discipline, significant recognition is made of the recipients of the John Truscott Award for Excellence in Design, the Betty Pounder Award for Original Choreography, and the Technical Achievement Award, The Gerda Nicholson Award is given to the recipient of the Female Actor in a Leading Role (Drama) in continuing memory of one of Melbourne's finest female actors. In addition, this year, 3 Special Awards will be given for events/careers of Outstanding Contribution. This year, the Green Room Awards will present a total of 53 medallions/trophies and the 3 Special Awards. The Association members are specialists connected with the Performing Arts in Melbourne, and include performers, writers, directors, event producers, choreographers, journalists, academics, theatre technicians and administrators. They give their time voluntarily to attend performances, sit on one or more of the six panels, and review productions in the six major disciplines. The Green Room Awards Association was formed in 1982 by Blair Edgar and Stephen Tandy. Representatives of performers, designers, artistic directors, administrators, managements and the Victorian ministry for the Arts formed a working party which met in Melbourne's old Green Room Club and the concept of Green Room Awards was born. Traditionally, performers meet in the Green Room named after the room originally decorated in green in London's Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.
