THE MAJESTIC THEATRE

THE “SAVE THE MAJESTIC” PROJECT - A GREAT OUTCOME

On Saturday, 2 September 2006,  the ( built 1921 ) Majestic Theatre was officially declared SAVED! - Noosa Councilor Brian Lindfield dressed as  W.C. Fields joined a bevy of silent stars, which included Charlie Chaplin and Mae West to celebrate the launch of this long awaited community project. The celebration was the culmination of several years of Pomona Progress.Art.Tourism Inc. striving to find a viable solution to save this iconic building.

In a hugely philanthropic gesture the owner for 33 years, Ron West, offered to sell the Theatre to Pomona Inc., a not for profit community group, on interest free vendor terms over 35 years. This allowed access to local, state and federal government funding which was unavailable to Ron as a private owner. Ron could have exercised his right to sell to the highest bidding developer, but thankfully for the town his love for the theatre and desire to see it continue to serve the community overrode any such consideration.

Under the Queensland Community Jobs Plan refurbishment of the theatre became a reality. Funded was provided by the Department of Employment & Industrial Relations. Silent movie screenings were suspended during the renovation period.

Some of the project work involved re-stumping, replacing the roof, removing all asbestos, restoring the superb crows ash sprung dance floor and installing a restaurant and café.
