On With The Show: A glimpse behind the scenes of entertainment in Australia
$18 John Cain, prowling tiger press, Melbourne Aust, November 1998 210pp
ISBN 0 9586647 3 0
On With The Show

Former Victorian Premier John Cain is the author of On With The Show - the stories of five key players in Australia's entertainment industry.

"The best of history lies in the memories of those who shape it. 'On With The Show' is the previously unrecorded memories of the working lives of five people: Kenn Brodziak, Ron Casey, Hector Crawford, Roc Kirby and Dick Lean.

Each played a key role in the formation of Australia's entertainment industry, in theatre, radio, television and cinema, creating venues, shows and benchmarks, shaping the way we are entertained.

The book documents the careers of these prominent entertainment industry players and also tells a bit about the various people associated with them. The book is very engaging reading and an important contribution to the recording of Australia's showbusiness history.

Theatres And Opera Houses: Masterpieces of Architecture

Cinema Index: Melbourne and Suburban Cinemas, Victorian Drive-ins.
CATHS
Out of Print.
It all started after hearing countless discussions about where a cinema used to be, is it demolished, or is it still standing and being used for something?
The index was compiled from information supplied by members and friends, many hours of reading old Sands & McDougall books on Victoria, old telephone directories, and many books specialising in cinemas. As the list is still not complete there will surely be some areas of dispute.  *** CURRENTLY BEING UPDATED AND REPRINTED ***

Videos

The Regent Is Melbourne
$10 Produced and Narrated by Graham Smythe, CATHS, VHS.
Probably CATHS' most important activity to date was the Regent Open Days in 1993. Held shortly before the Regent's long-awaited restoration, this video shows the theatre in its then derelict state. Over 4000 Melburnians came to inspect the Regent, with professionally guided tours, conducted by CATHS members. The Society installed special lighting, displays, and decorated the foyer with plants. The video also incorporates some colour slides of the Regent in its original condition.

Regent Nostalgia
$15 Produced by Denzil Howson, CATHS, VHS.
This video contains the history of the Regent Theatre, before its 1994 restoration, with beautiful colour slides and narration by Denzil Howson. A pioneer of Australian television. Denzil is active in CATHS and the Theatre Organ Society. Produced for the Save The Regent Campaign.

Progress, Western & Charlton Theatres Today
$12 Produced by Rod and Edweena Cook, Channel 5 Productions, 1998. 18 minutes VHS.
This video features three very different cinemas. The first, 'The Progress Theatre' West Coburg, was built in the 1920s as a wooden hall and through gradual improvement, has become a very pleasant suburban cinema. The 'Western Theatre' in neighbouring West Brunswick, is a substantial building which was built as a cinema and served the community until 1960. It re-opened briefly a decade later, and is now a venue for the Southern European communities. It still retains many elements of its cinema past including the imposing proscenium and seats in the dress circle. The 'Cinema Charlton', in Victoria's north, was closed in the 1960s and has now re-opened. Enjoy the interiors of some of the last remaining single screen picture theatre buildings.

Audio Tapes

This tape was recorded when Adeline Mims was a guest speaker at one of the CATHS meetings and has given us some wonderful memories of a silent-film pianist.
