The Gaiety Theatre was built in 1898 as a 'live' theatre venue. 'Silent' movies were screened there from c. 1910. On the opening night it was reported hundreds of people had to be turned away! In 1936 it was fitted out as a 'talkies' picture theatre and renamed the "New Gaiety".  The building was restored in the 1960s as part of the West Coast Heritage Centre museum complex next door. The Gaiety is operational as a pre-programmed tourist venue, giving visitors the experience of an Edwardian picture show.
